Why have Orthodontic Treatment?

“I’d prefer straighter teeth!”
Lots of people feel the same and braces are a great way to change this.

“My teeth stick out!”

This can sometimes be due to the teeth or the position of the jaws and a lot of us can thank our northern European heritage for that. A variety of braces can help with this by allowing the teeth to move into better positions and guiding the position of the jaw.
“My teeth don’t meet together!”
For some people this is just the way they are growing but more commonly this is because of routine and habits. Ongoing habits like digit sucking can cause the teeth to not meet properly at the front in particular. Once people realise the effect of what they are doing they can quite often break the habits but braces can help to get this back their best.

“I’ve got a deep bite!”

Deep bites can often be harmless but sometimes they can cause wear or damage to the teeth or supporting gums or make it challenging to do advanced dental work like crowns, bridges or implants. Braces can help to change the way the teeth overlap especially in growing patients.
“My teeth bite the wrong way around!”
Again this can be caused by individual tooth position or the ways the jaws are growing. Braces can help control the position of the teeth but can have a limited effect of the way you grow.

“I hate my gaps!”

Gaps are healthy! You can clean well around the teeth and be really effective at preventing tooth or gum disease BUT they don’t always look that nice. Some gaps are caused by missing teeth and braces are really useful to set the straightness and position up to either close the spaces or make it easier for your clever dentist to replace the missing teeth. Teeth that are generally spaced can be closed together with a brace but
will likely need to be kept in that position long term.
“All my teeth haven’t come through!”
Sometimes adult teeth go off course and get themselves trapped in awkward positions. This is called impaction. Braces can work to create room for these teeth and help them erupt into a good position so that they don’t cause any damage or problems.
